Dr. Rainer Hable
Dr. Rainer Hable (born 1972) is a Lawyer specialising in European Union Law and Policy. He is admitted to the Vienna Bar.
Dr. Rainer Hable was a Member of the Austrian Parliament (2013-17), where he served as a Member of the National Security Council and group spokesperson in the parliamentary committees on EU Affairs, Budget, Finance, and the European Stability Mechanism. Furthermore, he served as a parliamentary group leader on the ad hoc Hypo Inquiry Committee, the longest-running inquiry in Parliament’s history. He also successfully initiated the repeal of the Hypo Special Act by the Constitutional Court, a rare case of a law appealed by Parliament.
Before entering politics, Dr. Hable practised law with leading international law firms (2007-2013) and clerked with the Vienna Court of Appeals (2006-07). He worked in policy roles at the UK Department for Transport in London (2004-05) and at the EU Commission Secretary-General in Brussels (2001). At the London School of Economics and Political Science (LSE), he taught public finance and economics (2005-06). At the Johannes Kepler Universität Linz, he researched on financial relations of federal states and acted as consultant to the regional government (2000-01). He served as an infantry soldier in the Austrian Army (1990-91) and remains on active duty as a reserve officer and infantry platoon commander to date.
Rainer Hable holds a Diploma in Business and Dr. iur. and Mag. iur. (2000) Law degrees from Johannes Kepler Universität Linz as well as a Diploma in Economics and an M.Sc. in Public Financial Policy (2004) from the London School of Economics and Political Science (LSE).
For advanced studies in European Union law, he attended the European Forum in Alpbach, the European Law Academy in Trier, and the Academy of European Law in Florence.
Before joining the army, he graduated from a humanistic Gymnasium in Linz, completing his school education with the Matura (GCE A-Level) in Geography, German, and English (1990).
Rainer Hable is an avid tennis player and regular supporter of Team Europe at the Laver Cup. He enjoys good stories, be it watching movies or reading biographies and historic novels. He loves travelling, ranging from mountain-climbing in the Alpes to city trips all over Europe.
